“The inauguration of the first open amateur tournament on the Eden Course last week was attended by complete success. From start to finish the whole arrangements worked splendidly – like a well-oiled machine.

Possible those players who left half-crown balls out among the whins by the Eden, and multiplied strokes did a bit of quiet murmuring on their own, swore at the course, etc., but I reckon by the time they had finished the round all their troubles were forgotten. Think, too, of the scenery they enjoyed looking for those lost balls!

It was a thoroughly enjoyable tournament, in which interest was sustained right up to the end of the final round; the weather was ideal throughout; and a good-humoured holiday crowd got what they have been sighing for for years in August in St Andrews – a week of golf of the right sort.  Assuredly this Eden Course Tournament has come to stay ………………..”
Local Golf Gossip, The St Andrews Citizen, August 1919

The above throwback to the initial year of the Eden Tournament makes delightful reading and many of the above points still hold true today, 100 years later!  We hope many of you will be able to join us in celebrating this milestone of the Centenary of the Eden Tournament in August 2019.

Alongside the usual playing schedule of the Tournament, we will introduce additional social and golf events to bring together many of the present and past competitors to meet, mingle and share stories of past exploits – both on the golf course and in local hostelries of St Andrews.
These will include a Centenary Dinner in the Old Course Hotel on Saturday 10 August 2019, with a hickory golf event and seniors / past Champions competition during the week.  Further details of these events will follow in the New Year.

The entry procedures for the Eden Tournament will follow similar lines as in 2018 although up to 40 places will be reserved for those entrants who are deemed to have a long-standing association with the Tournament, as decided by the Committee. This may include, for example, playing in the event for more than 20 years, previous winners of the Eden Trophy or Eden Tankard etc, or any other deciding factor as deemed appropriate by the Committee.

Please click here to see the entry procedures for 2019.  After submission of your entry, you will receive an email asking for clarification of your long-standing association with the Eden Tournament, which will help the Committee to determine those players who may be deserving of a place in this special Centenary year but who may not be successful in the normal entry process.
The lists of previous winners of the Eden Trophy and the Eden Tankard are to be found on our website.  Efforts will be made to contact all previous winners but if you would like to pass on any contact details, in particular for invitations to the Dinner and/or the golf events on Wednesday and Thursday of the tournament week, please email

In addition to the golf and social events, we would also welcome feedback and memorabilia, from previous entrants, which we will look to display in various ways during the week of the Eden Tournament.  Everything handed in will be clearly marked with your name and returned after the Centenary tournament.  Also a Centenary blog will be set up online, for previous competitors to share their stories, memories, experiences (good and bad!) for all to view and enjoy.  Again, please email
