St Andrews Links Trophy 2017

(established 1989)

Tournament Conditions

  • A competitor must be an amateur as defined by the current Rules of Amateur Status.
  • The Championship shall comprise 72 holes of stroke play, which will be played in accordance with the Rules of Golf as approved by R&A Rules Ltd and with the Local Rules approved by the Organising Committee.
  • Entry will be limited to 144 competitors. Competitors will play 18 holes on the Jubilee Course on Friday 9 June and 18 holes on the Old Course on Saturday 10 June. The 40 lowest scores over these 36 holes, and any tying for 40th place, will qualify for the final 36 holes to be played over the Old Course on Sunday 11 June 2017. The remainder will be eliminated.
  • In the event of a tie after four rounds, the winner will be decided by a sudden death play-off over holes 1 and 18. Ties for other places will be decided on the lowest score for the last 18 holes or the last 9 or 6 or 3 or 2 or 1 hole. In the event of there still being a tie, the scores on the first 9 or 6 or 3 or 2 or 1 hole will be considered. Subsequently if still tied, a hole-by-hole match play summary should be used. If still tied, the scores for the 3rd round will be treated in the same way until a decision is reached.
  • Specification of Clubs and the Ball: The Specimen conditions on pg 154 and 155 in the Rules of Golf will be in effect as regards Conforming Driver Heads and Conforming Golf Balls.
  • Pace of Play conditions will be distributed at Registration.
  • Drugs: A competitor must not knowingly make use of any drug to enhance his performance. A competitor must, if requested, submit to a random drug test. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
  • Transportation: Players must not ride on any form of transportation during a stipulated round unless authorised by the Committee.
  • Distance-Measuring Devices: The specimen Local Rule on pg 153 in the Rules of Golf will be in effect allowing the use of distance-measuring devices. 
  • The Committee reserves the right to disqualify any competitor making a false statement on his entry form or to refuse or reject any entry without giving reason for its decision.
  • The Competitor shall start at the time laid down by the Committee.
  • The Committee reserves the right to fix and/or alter starting times and to alter or amend any of the conditions.
  • The Committee’s decision in all disputes is final.


Entry Conditions

  • Entries will only be accepted from male competitors whose handicap, under the current CONGU handicapping scheme or under the scheme adopted in the country from which the competitor enters, is scratch or better.
  • All entries will be submitted using the online entry procedures on the St Andrews Links website at:
  • All competitors will be required to submit confirmation of their exact handicap to verify their entry: either enter your CDH number on the entry form (for entrants from Scotland, England or Wales), or attach your current certificate at the time of entry (file format: gif/jpg/doc/pdf) or send within 4 days from date of entry. NB: Please note that handicap verification must be received by the closing date at the latest, ie by Thursday 4 May 2017.
  • A competitor entering from the USA must seek handicap verification from his home State Association. Other competitors entering from overseas must provide handicap verification from the Secretary of the recognised authority controlling golf in the country from which they elect to enter.
  • NB: A competitor holding both a CONGU and overseas authority handicap must enter the Championship using his CONGU handicap. A player entering with a USGA handicap will be required to have held a USGA handicap index for a continual period of 3 years or more. Exception: A player who has held a USGA handicap index for less than 3 years will be considered for entry if their last held handicap under a recognised handicapping system would gain entry within the entry criteria.
  • The entry fee is £60. Please note that full payment of the entry fee is to be made at the time of online entry. Failure to pay the entry fee at the time of entry may result in your entry not being accepted.
  • Entry fees will not be refunded unless intimation of withdrawal is received before the closing date or in the case of a player's unsuccessful entry.  The Committee will consider a partial / full refund if a supporting medical letter is received.
  • The closing date for entries is Thursday 4 May 2017.
  • If the number of entries exceeds the maximum number of 144 places, a list of reserves will be prepared according to the entrants' position on the WAGR as at the closing date. Any vacancies as a result of competitors withdrawing after the closing date will be filled from the list of reserves. This reserve list will be published on the website and regularly updated.
  • All entries will be subject to the approval of the Committee, which reserves the right to accept or refuse or, having accepted, subsequently reject any entry without giving reason for its decision.


Entries will be accepted in the following order

(provided they meet the entry criteria)

  • The previous winners of the St Andrews Links Trophy from 2012 - 2016 inc. 
  • The 2017 GB&I Walker Cup Squad.
  • Four nominations from each of the Home Golfing Unions – the names of the nominees must be confirmed to the Tournament Office by Wednesday 3 May 2017.
  • Two nominations from selected overseas Unions / Associations – the names of the nominees must be confirmed to the Tournament Office by Wednesday 3 May 2017.
  • Four nominations from the St Andrews Links Trust.
  • All remaining entries up to the maximum number of 144 will be accepted in WAGR order as per the official R&A WAGR list as at Thursday 4 May 2017. 


Trophies and Prize money

  • The presentation of Trophies will take place immediately after close of play on Sunday 11 June 2017 at the 1st tee of the Old Course. All prize winners are expected to attend the presentation.
  • All Trophies are retained by the Links Management Committee.
  • The St Andrews Links Trophy will be awarded to the winner, who will receive a commemorative medal.
  • The Ian Forbes Memorial Cup will be awarded for the best aggregate score over the first two days of the Championship.
  • Vouchers will be awarded for the leading 10 places to the value of:
    1st - £500
    2nd - £400
    3rd - £350
    4th - £300
    5th - £250
    6th - £225
    7th - £200
    8th - £175
    9th - £150
    10th - £125
