The Castle Course hosts Women’s Open Qualifier

August 02 2017

The Castle Course hosted its first major event on Monday as it held the final qualifying round for the Ricoh Women’s British Open which takes place at Kingsbarns this week.

With only 22 spots available among 111 golfers, including some big names such as Paula Creamer, Christina Kim and Laura Davies to name but a few, the battle was on.

Paula Creamer was first in after an early start with an impressive four-under 68, putting her firmly at the top of the leaderboard and setting the pace for the majority of the day.

She said after her round: “It was a beautiful golf course. My caddie worked really hard, because it was the first time I had ever seen it. I teed off at 7:22 so I couldn’t do much preparation. After I played yesterday I came out and hit some putts and walked the last three or four holes. It’s an awesome little gem here. What a fun golf course to play.”

1986 winner Laura Davies carded a two-under 70, which eventually saw her in a dramatic play-off with 13 others vying for the remaining 11 spots. Ultimately Davies’ experience shone through and she can now look forward to making a record 37th appearance in the Ricoh Women’s British Open.

By later in the day, Creamer was joined at the top by two others, fellow American Tiffany Joh and South Africa’s Ashleigh Buhai. However, it was late starter, Ursula Wikstrom, from Finland, who posted a five-under 67 to finish as outright leading qualifier.

The efforts put in by the St Andrews Links greenkeepers ahead of the event certainly paid off, with many of the competitors praising the course. To find out more about what it took to get the course ready to host the world’s top female professionals, read Course Manager, Jon Wood’s, blog here
