Team GB Celebrate Simpson Cup Success On The Old Course

May 23 2019

St Andrews Links Trust proudly hosted the eighth edition of the Simpson Cup this week, welcoming injured Servicemen and veterans from Great Britain and the USA to compete in the annual Ryder Cup style tournament.

Designed to raise funds and awareness for the On Course Foundation, which champions the recovery of injured and sick Service personnel and veterans through nationwide golf events and employment in the golf industry, the event provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate bravery and camaraderie through golf.

The event’s first visit to the Home of Golf proved to be inspirational surroundings for Team GB, who  reversed three successive defeats to regain the Simpson Cup at the Old Course with an impressive 11.5 - 7.5 victory over Team USA on Wednesday, bringing the overall series standings to 4 wins apiece.

Having got the edge over their American counterparts in the Tuesday fourball matches on the New Course, the Brits headed into the final day singles with just a one-point lead.

The host nation took control from the off and, fittingly, it was captain Ian Bishop who finished the job for his team sealing a 4&3 triumph over Jesse Williamson.

Ian, who has played in every Simpson Cup, became involved with the On Course Foundation in 2010 after meeting John Simpson, the founder of the Simpson Cup, at Hasler Company Rehabilitation Centre.

He added: “When the Simpson Cup was being launched we came to St Andrews for a meeting and John said then that one day we would play here. And now here he we are competing on the Old Course, it’s incredible really!

“It has been a fantastic few days with great golf, played in the right spirit at the most wonderful venue. It has been a dream come true to play the Simpson Cup at St Andrews and to win is just the icing on the cake.”
