President Obama visits the Home of Golf

May 26 2017

Former US President Barack Obama visited the Home of Golf today to play the world’s most famous Links during his first visit to Scotland.

President Obama joined a long line of Presidents who have graced the Old Course over the past century.

With beautiful blue skies and glorious sunshine gracing the Links, President Obama striped his opening drive down the middle of the 1st fairway, prompting rapturous applause as he doffed his cap to the gathered crowd.

Sir Tom Hunter, whose charitable foundation has invited Obama to speak in Edinburgh, joined the President to walk the course and the pair spent time during the round shaking hands as large crowds lined fairways and greens anxious to catch a glimpse of the 44th President.

St Andrews Links Chief Executive Euan Loudon presented President Obama with a Callaway Epic driver before his round and thanked him for joining the rich heritage of Presidents, dating back to President Eisenhower in 1946, who famously skipped the first tee and headed to the 2nd tee to help overcome his nerves.

Mr Loudon said: “We are delighted to welcome President Obama to the Home of Golf and delighted to see his round being warmly welcomed and supported by his fellow golfers and thousands of local residents, who surrounded the 18th hole today. It has been a glorious day, prompting truly remarkable scenes for the Links and the town of St Andrews.

“We hope President Obama has had a memorable experience, like the thousands of golfers who visit us every year, at the Home of Golf.”

President Obama, who left immediately after his round to return to Edinburgh in preparation for the Hunter Foundation dinner, joked: “They tell me the weather is like this all the time here.

“But seriously the Old Course is absolutely glorious. It has been a great thrill to be able to come and play here at the Home of Golf for the first time. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to St Andrews Links for hosting us.”
