Teenage fundraiser shows support for incredible Simpson Cup competitors

May 22 2019

This week St Andrews Links hosted the Simpson Cup for the first time, welcoming wounded military personnel from both sides of the Atlantic to compete in an annual event to raise funds and awareness for the On Course Foundation.

So what better place could there be for keen golfer and fundraiser Jack Pennal to present the charity with a cheque for £1600, which he has spent the past six months raising.

Jack, 13, from Sunderland was encouraged to start fundraising as part of his Duke of Edinburgh’s Award he was participating in as part of his role as an RAF Air Cadet.

And despite knowing very little about the On Course Foundation prior to this, he was inspired by their aim to champion the recovery of injured and sick Service personnel and veterans through nationwide golf events and employment in the golf industry.

As well as raffles, football cards and book sales, Jack hosted putting competitions whilst taking part in a junior winter tour with his local golf club around the North East of England charging just £1 to enter.

Following presentation of the cheque on the first tee of the Old Course, Jack joined St Andrews Links’ Director of Instruction Steve North for a lesson at the Golf Academy before returning to see both sides contest the closing stages over the Old Course.

As one of the youngest fundraisers the On Course foundation has ever had, Jack hopes to raise awareness of the charity as well as continue to raise more funds with plans already in the pipeline for an auction of signed sports memorabilia.
