Local Clubs Get Taste Of The Open As They Compete In Gold Medal

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s Local Clubs’ Gold Medal Competition, regarded as the Men’s Strokeplay Championship of St Andrews, was played over The Old Course on Sunday 15th May 2022. This was the 120th staging of the Gold Medal since first played in 1890, which was made extra special for competitors by the presence of grandstands in place for The Open in July.
 
The maximum starting Field of 60 was made up of 27 Competitors from The St Andrews Golf Club, 22 from The New Golf Club, 5 from The University of St Andrews Golf Club and 6 from The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
 
At the end of Round 1, the lead was held by Oliver Mukherjee of the New Golf Club, with a scratch score of 68, one stroke clear of the Field. The twelve Competitors with the lowest Round 1 scores, and any ties for twelfth place, qualified for Round 2. The qualifying score was 72, and 16 Competitors made the cut. The Runner-up was Samuel Mukherjee of the New Golf Club with a score of 140 (69 + 71). The Winner of the Gold Medal, and the “2022 Men’s Champion of the Links”, was Oliver Mukherjee of the New Golf Club with a score of 137 (69 + 68).

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s Local Clubs’ Women’s Gold Medal Competition, was also played over The Old Course on Sunday 15th May 2022. This was the sixth staging of the Women’s Gold Medal. A starting field of 21 was made up of 13 Competitors from St Regulus Ladies’ Golf Club, 2 from the St Rule Club, 4 from The University of St Andrews Golf Club and 2 from The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. The runners-up were was Cara Thompson and Susan Wood both of the St Regulus Ladies Golf Club with a Scratch score of 78. The Winner of the Gold Medal, and the “2022 Women’s Champion of the Links”, was Megan Ashley of the University of St Andrews Golf Club with a Scratch score of 76.
 
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s Local Clubs’ Junior Gold Medal Competition, was also played over The Old Course on Sunday 15th May 2022. This was the third staging of a Junior Gold Medal.  There was a starting field of 10 boys and 1 girl. The Runners-Up was Jamie McDonald and Cameron Mukherjee of The New Golf Club with a scratch score of 75. The Winner of the Gold Medal, and the “2022 Junior Champion of the Links”, was Ewen Farquhar of The New Golf Club with a scratch score of 74.
 
The Medals were presented by Peter Forster, Captain of The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and Mary Forster, who commended the competitors on their outstanding performances.
