Sudden death play-offs decide the 2021 Champions of the Links

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s Local Clubs’ Gold Medal Competition, regarded as the Strokeplay Championship of St Andrews, was played over the Old Course on Sunday 16th May 2021. This was the 119th staging of the Men’s Gold Medal since first played in 1890 (there being no competition during The First and The Second World Wars).

The maximum starting field of 60 for men was made up of 31 Competitors from The St Andrews Golf Club, 20 from The New Golf Club, four from The University of St Andrews Golf Club and five from The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. The highest handicap in the field was + 0.3.

At the end of Round 1, the lead was held by Shaun Singer of The St Andrews Golf Club, with a scratch score of 67, two strokes clear of the field. The twelve Competitors with the lowest Round 1 scores, and any ties for twelfth place, qualified for Round 2. The qualifying score was 73, and 20 Competitors made the cut. After Round 2 there was a two-way sudden death play-off between Shaun Singer (67 and 72) and Marc Gentles (69 and 70) who tied on an aggregate scratch sore of 139. The Runner-up was Marc Gentles of The St Andrews Golf Club, who lost on the 1st extra hole. The Winner of the Gold Medal, and the “2021 Men’s Champion of the Links”, was Shaun Singer of The St Andrews Golf Club.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s Local Clubs’ Women’s Gold Medal Competition, was also played over the Old Course on Sunday 16th May 2021. This was the fifth staging of the Women’s Gold Medal. A starting field of 21 was made up of 19 Competitors from St Regulus Ladies’ Golf Club, one from The University of St Andrews Golf Club and one from The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. There was a three-way sudden death play-off between Eilidh Watson, Susan Wood and Gillian Paton who were all tied on a scratch score of 76. The runners-up were Eilidh Watson, who bogeyed the first extra hole and Susan Wood, who lost on the 4th extra hole. Both are members of the St Regulus Golf Club. The Winner of the Gold Medal, and the “2021 Women’s Champion of the Links”, was Gillian Paton of The St Regulus Golf Club.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s Local Clubs’ Junior Gold Medal Competition, was also played over the Old Course on Sunday 16th May 2021. This was the second staging of a Junior Gold Medal. There was a starting field of 12 boys. The Runner-Up was Ross Laird of The New Golf Club with a scratch score of 72. The Winner of the Gold Medal, and the “2021 Junior Champion of the Links”, was Samuel Mukherjee of The New Golf Club with a scratch score of 69.

The Medals were presented by Sir Michael Bonallack, Past Captain of The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, and Lady Angela Bonallack, who both commended the competitors on their outstanding performances.
