Local Clubs’ Gold Medal welcomes addition of Junior Competition

The historic Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s Local Clubs’ Gold Medal Competition, regarded as the Men’s Strokeplay Championship of St Andrews, was played over the Old Course on Sunday 30th August 2020. This year also saw the introduction of a Junior Gold Medal Competition. 

The maximum starting field of 60 was made up of 34 competitors from The St Andrews Golf Club, 20 from The New Golf Club, four from The University of St Andrews Golf Club and two from The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.

At the end of Round 1, the lead was tied by Ben Caton of The New Golf Club and Scott Finlay of The St Andrews Golf Club, with a scratch score of 67, two strokes clear of the field. The twelve competitors with the lowest Round 1 scores, and any ties for twelfth place, qualified for Round 2. The qualifying score was 72, and 14 competitors made the cut. After Round 2 and the conclusion of the competition, the Runner-up with a 36-hole aggregate scratch score of 139 (72 and 67) was Colin Donaldson-Nixon of The St Andrews Golf Club with the better last round over Scott Finlay of The St Andrews Golf Club. The Winner of the Gold Medal, and the “2020 Men’s Champion of the Links”, with a 36-hole aggregate scratch score of 134 (67 and 67) was Ben Caton of The New Golf Club.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s Local Clubs’ Women’s Gold Medal Competition, was also played over the Old Course on Sunday 30th August 2020. This was the fourth staging of a Women’s Gold Medal. A starting field of 21 was made up of 16 competitors from St Regulus Ladies’ Golf Club, three from The St Rule Club and two from the University of St Andrews Golf Club. The Runner-up was Susan Wood of St Regulus Golf Club with a scratch score of 73. The Winner of the Gold Medal, and the “2020 Women’s Champion of the Links”, was Megan Ashley of the University of St Andrews Golf Club with a scratch score of 68.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s Local Clubs’ Junior Gold Medal Competition, was played over the Old Course on Sunday 30th August 2020. This was the first staging of a Junior Gold Medal.  A starting field of six was made up of one girl and five boys. The Runner-Up was Ewen Farquhar of The New Golf Club with a scratch score of 74 on count back over the last 9 holes over Samuel Mukherjee.  The Winner of the Gold Medal, and the “2020 Junior Champion of the Links”, was Oliver Mukherjee of The New Golf Club with a scratch score of 72.

The Medals were presented by Graeme Simmers, Trustee and Past Captain of The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, who commended the competitors on their outstanding performances.
