Global Golf Community Support Fundraiser For Caddies At The Home of Golf

April 17 2020

A new fundraising campaign has been launched to support caddies at St Andrews who are facing financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In line with government guidance, the courses and facilities at St Andrews Links closed temporarily on March 24 as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. That has left the caddies who regularly stride the fairways without anywhere to work and, in turn, unable to earn money.

St Andrews Links Trust Caddie Manager Fraser Riddler has launched a GoFundMe campaign to try to help those facing the most significant financial burden during this period. Fraser said: “The closure of golf facilities as a result of the Covid19 pandemic has had a huge impact on so many businesses and people within the golf industry.

“Unfortunately, this is particularly true of the caddies who regularly stride the fairways at St Andrews Links. Caddies have been part of the fabric of golf in St Andrews for almost as long as the game has been played here, but with no play possible for the foreseeable future and international travel set to be badly affected for the remainder of the summer season, caddie’s livelihoods are being seriously impacted.

“Many have sought alternative means of employment but a significant number have been unsuccessful due to the wider economic implications facing so many industries.”

Many people from across the global golf community had expressed a desire to support the caddies with Fraser creating the GoFundMe page to enable donations to be made.

Fraser added: “Myself and the caddies have been blown away by the initial response and would like to thank everyone for their support. “All monies donated will help to ease concerns over financial hardship that might face many caddies in the coming weeks and months.”

Any monies donated will be used to assist caddies who regularly work the fairways of the courses at St Andrews Links and who are in need or face financial hardship and who apply for assistance. At present donations totalling almost £7000 have been recorded.

Please note that this account is being operated by Fraser Riddler as an individual and is not linked to St Andrews Links Trust.

100% of all funds raised will be distributed to St Andrews caddies.
