The Grand Old Man of Golf
2021 marked the 200th year since Old Tom Morris's birth
From the cobbles to the courses, Old to the New, Tom Morris’s presence can still be felt wherever you go in his hometown of St Andrews. Born on 16 June 1821, Morris was the son of a weaver and embraced the game of golf from a very young age.
“St Andrews bairns are born wi’ web feet an wi’ a golf-club in their hands. I wad be driving the chuckie stanes wi’ a bit stick about as sune’s I could walk”
His path took him from caddie to club-maker; custodian of Prestwick where The Open was born to four-time winner of the same championship; Keeper of the Green at St Andrews Links to revered designer of over 70 courses throughout the UK and Ireland.
In 2021, the bicentenary of his birth, the famous Links of St Andrews celebrated the Grand Old Man of Golf on and off the course with a number of unique events, exclusive content and bespoke, limited edition products.
We've also put his storied life to ‘paper’ in the style of an old scrapbook that Old Tom himself used to keep which you can view and download below.
