Teeshot Strategies. This tip present three key points to
bear in mind as you plan your tee shots.
Point 1 Tee up with the trouble:
Let's say there's bad trouble down the right side on a par 4.
You'd be forgiven for teeing up on the left site of the tee, away from the trouble.
But in fact, the Pros tend to do exactly the opposite - they will tee it up close
to the trouble and then aim away from it.
So for example with all the trouble down the right, tee up on
the right and play away from the danger that lurks down that side.
Even a pushed teeshot will find the fairway, because, by teeing
up on the side where all the trouble is, you have widened the angle to the target
area out in the fairway, and have taken the trouble, both psychologically and
physically, out of play.
Point
2 Know your best approach shot - Use the club off the tee which
leaves you with your favourite second shot into the green.
For example, on a short par 4, you might be tempted to get as
close to the green as possible witha booming drive. More often than not you'll
be left with a tricky pitch from a difficult lie or angle.
That's because short par 4's are designed so that the closer you
get to the green with your drive, the more demanding the approach shot. And if
your favourite shot is a 150-yard 7-iron, then why not consider laying up at that
distance? Then use your favourite club into the green.
Point 3 Be certain - As Arnold Palmer once
said, "great golf is played exclusively between the ears". This is never
more true than on the tee.
When you step up to a tough drive, if a negative thought comes
into your mind such as 'whatever you do don't go right', the chances are you will
do just that. Its worth taking your time, re-grouping, and perhaps changing club.
Never tee off with a doubt in your mind about what shot you are trying to play.
Again its a question of balancing aggression with common sense.
Summary: With the emphasis
always on technology and long-hitting, don't lose sight of the real purpose of
the drive - to set up the next shot from the best possible position suited to
your game.
